The status of “amateur” is given to the player who has the ability to play the game, has competed in competitions but not for any financial benefits. Leona Maguire & Hannah O'Sullivan are two up-and-coming amateur golfers who have the potential to progress into the professional category.
Leona Maguire is an Irish golfer who has a twin sister who is also an accomplished golfer. Leona gave up swimming to devote herself to golf. She started winning competitions at the age of seven. In 2013, she won the Hermitage Ladies Scratch Cup and won countless competitions in 2013 and 2014. In 2014, she entered Duke University and was ranked first in NCAA College golf. She was named Irish Young Sports Star of the Year for 2015 and in March, 2016, she was named ACC Women’s College Golfer of the Month for February.
Hannah O'Sullivan is a 16 year-old American golfer who attends Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona. She has been winning competitions since her first win at the 2010 Stockton Sports Commission Junior Open. In 2014 and 2014, she was part of the US team at the Junior Ryder Cup and the Junior Solheim Cup, respectively. In 2014, she was a semi-finalist at the US Women’s Amateur Championship. In 2015 she set a new record for being the youngest winner in the Symetra Tour by winning the Gateway Classic. Other competitions in 2015 were the Winn Grips Heather Farr Classic, the Rolex Girls Junior Championship, the Rolex Tournament of Champions and the US Women’s Amateur Championship.
